2,000 frequent flyer miles?

eager2know asked:

I have 2,000 frequent flyer miles through american airlines. I live in vegas and i want to go to chicago for a visit. That is 1510 miles away. Can the 2,000 bonus miles I have already work in discounting my airline ticket?

Please help!!

Unfortunately, On AA, miles can’t work in conjunction with cash to reduce a fare. You either have to have the required number of miles to travel from Vegas to Chichago or pay for the trip. The only airline that offers miles and cash is BMI.

    No.

You need 5,000 for an upgrade from Economy to First with them (which is what I use my miles for ’cause I can’t stand to be in the chattel section).

You need 25,000! for a full ticket in Economy for a domestic flight.

    They don’t do discounts.

The answers that say you cannot use American Airlines miles to discount a fare in conjunction with cash is wrong. AA does allow persons to pay a combination of cash and miles for a variety of awards — the link to the page describing these types of awards is below.

That being said, however, 2,000 miles is not enough to utilize this program — the cheapest mileage award for a discount needs 10,000 miles. And, as has already been described, it takes 25,000 miles to get a domestic coach award ticket or 15,000 miles to upgrade a domestic paid coach ticket to first class (not 5,000).
