5. If you are traveling to your villa in Spain but don’t want to pay scheduled airline prices, book the cheapest holiday you can find. Just don’t use the hotel room. Some of these deals are really great.

6. If you are traveling from the USA to a European capital, don’t fly direct. Fly to London and get one of the budget airlines to your ultimate destination.

7. Join clubs that can get cheap air fares. Flight clubs are known to purchase in bulk and, thus, their members benefit from these economies – usually to as much as 70% of the normal prices.

8. Some countries have promotional periods when air fares to their countries are reduced. Search online to get the most up-to-date prices.

9 .Midnight flights on some airlines are reduced as most people don’t want to travel then. Peak times are obviously during working hours and you can find a significant reduction after peak times.

10. Book the whole package with your agent: flights, hotels, car, etc. By doing this altogether it should be much cheaper than if you purchased everything separately.

I have personally been using these methods for over 10 years and, to date, must have saved tens of thousands in airfares. Lastly, buy airline tickets and use them at the appointed time. Cancellation of flights and rescheduling often have stiff penalties. Finding the most affordable airline tickets is actually quite challenging.  The rise and fall of airline ticket costs is very unpredictable.  Timing is everything, yet other factors such as the source of your tickets, the season of your flight, the demand of your destination, among other things, also comes into play.  Getting the best airfare can be a frustrating experience when at the back of your mind, there is a huge possibility that some people who you share the flight with actually just paid half, or worse, a quarter of what you thought was your “bargain” find.  

To make sure that you get the best deal in airline tickets, you need to have an idea of how airlines set prices.  This complex procedure of fare pricing boils down to three factors: inventory, demand, and competition.  The inventory, or number of seats available in all flights in all airlines, are fed into four reservation systems, namely WorldSpan, Galileo, Apollo, and Sabre.  As in the fundamental economic principle of supply and demand, if one flight has a lot of takers, then the price goes up, while if a flight is not selling well, the price goes down to entice people to buy available seats.  The thing is, the four reservation systems are not updated at the same time, thus seats fed into one system may have gone very high because of demand, while the seats fed to the other system might still be low because no one has yet taken advantage of them.  To beat this system, certain “tricks” can be done:

•    Having flexible dates allows you to check the most credible lowest fare, as you have set the price, and not the date as the most important factor.

•     Searching as early as possible will allow you to get majority of the deals.  At the same time, take note that last minute fares can also be the most affordable.

•     Red eye flights and flights with numerous stopovers will definitely cost less than “primetime” non-stop flights.  Demand for these flights is low and therefore, prices are, too.

•    Flights that land or depart from main airports are actually more costly than flights that depart or arrive in minor neighboring airports.  Chances are, flights departing from or arriving in New York’s La Guardia Airport is a bit more costly than flights departing from or arriving in the airport in Newark, New Jersey, which is quite near, considering you might get stuck in traffic leaving or getting to La Guardia.

•    Remember that discounted fares usually carry a lot of restrictions, too.

that’s super cheap for an international flight im happy lol but I dont understand why, and I always buy tickets to the same destination and I never seen any that cheap, by the way just before buy it i registered on the airline iberia site so i can get some miles, since the flight first go to new york wit American airlines and then with Iberia, so in the process of buy the flight I put the number code iberia gave me, so why would they make me a discount when I ddnt have no miles U_U

Do you love to travel? I do too, and I am always looking for new ways to find inexpensive airline tickets. I prefer to spend my money on other things rather than spending a bundle on airfare just to get to my destination. I bet you would too. So I have gathered together a few tips to help all of us “thrifty” travelers.

1. Check neighboring cities. For example, if you are planning on flying into Washington DC, be sure to check out prices for flights to Baltimore instead, as these flights are almost always less expensive.

2. If you are not traveling internationally, consider flying on one of the subsidiary airlines for the major carriers (such as Delta Express), as you will usually save money this way.

3. Be sure to use the Internet to check out last-minute discounted fares on the airline’s website. Start looking Wednesday for the upcoming weekend.

For one thing, you will have a hard time getting the seats and dates you want if you wait until the last minute, but you also will save on airfare by buying early. However, be sure of your itinerary because you will cancel out all savings you made if you have to change your travel dates.

11. Make sure you always book your flights at least 21 days in advance. This will get you the best fares. The earlier the better in this case. Never buy tickets within 7 days of your planned departure if you can help it, as you will pay a significantly higher fare.

12. Consider traveling on the “red eye” flights. Check with your travel agent to see if you can save with these late-night fares. You can often save as much as 25% this way.

However, there are some time proven axioms that one can follow to put the odds on your side in helping you to reduce the cost of your air travel:

#1 Change the Time You Travel

Don’t be rigid on the time of day you want to travel.  Going between New York and Los Angeles, for example, may have one airline offering as many as seven or eight flights on a particular day.  If you want to leave in the morning, investigate the three or four departures offered during that time period.  Moving your departure time by just one hour, on your departure or return, may save you a significant portion of the ticket price.

#2 Change the Day You Travel

Even if you require traveling on a particular airline or time of day, look at moving your desired departure or return day by one or two days.  It is often the case that a particular flight may be cheaper on a Tuesday than a Wednesday, or a Saturday instead of a Sunday.  The side benefit of this might be a free one-day “vacation” as the savings in airfare can more than offset the additional cost of a hotel room and meals. 

#3 Change the Route You Travel

Yes, we all like to travel directly from where we are to our destination as quickly as possible and without changing planes.  But how much is this worth to you?  Airlines often make connecting flights from your origin to destination less expensive than their non-stop flights.  It may add a couple of hours to travel time but it may be worth the hundreds of dollars you might be saving.  Airline websites, unfortunately, are designed to show you the most direct and shortest time between the cities you request.  If they have an option to “search by fare” use that option with maximum number of results possible and drill down deep in the results to make sure you see all the fares available. 

#4 Change the Airline You Use to Travel

Competition is a wonderful thing!  Many routes are highly competitive and it can force an airline with traditional dominance in a market to drop its airfares, sometimes dramatically, in response to a new competitor or fare sale from other competing airlines.  Often times these “sales” will happen on a moment’s notice and may only last for a few days.  If you have a favorite airline you wish to use, subscribe to their email alerts for your favorite cities so you can be kept up to date on any fare changes.  But, don’t limit yourself to just one airline.  Do it for all the airlines in your market.

#5 First Class Cheaper Than Coach?

No discussion of airfares would be complete without talking about the new currency for airfares: the frequent flyer mile.  More and more of us are accumulating these frequent flyer miles that pay for airline tickets.  Our first inclination when trying to redeem these miles is to seek out a coach seat using the lowest amount of miles, typically around 25,000 miles.  However, it is usually the case that the airline does not have any seats at the lowest mileage redemption level when you would like to travel but may have them if you use twice the miles.  Before giving in to this requirement, ask about business or first class awards.  You may be surprised how many times discounted business or first class awards may be available to and from your destination for the same or less or slightly more miles than for double mileage coach awards.  The extra comfort and perks are the icing on the cake!
